Dr. Michelle Flenniken,
Haagen-Dazs postdoctoral fellow

"A Molecular Biology Approach to Honey Bee Pathogen & Colony Collapse Disorder Research"

A presentation about Michelle's research focused on pathogen detection in honey bee samples and her work investigating the honey bee antiviral immune system.

Häagen-Dazs postdoctoral fellow Dr. Michelle Flenniken is conducting studies on the details of honey bee cellular immune responses to infection by RNA viruses in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Mission Bay campus of UC San Francisco.

The eventual goal is to find a way to interfere with virus replication in infected host cells. Working in conjunction with Dr. Joseph Derisi's team, in an adjacent laboratory, she also is involved in the process of developing microarray "chips" that will be able to demonstrate the presence of any known honey bee pathogen(s) in a submitted bee sample.

Michelle obtains her virus-infected bees from Bay Area hobby beekeepers and she delivers extremely well-received research presentations to audiences with all levels of apicultural expertise.

Hive Inspection and practical Beekeeping tips With Randy Oliver
Cost: $50

This workshop is limited to 20 participants.  This is a hands-on workshop, which will provide you with practical techniques and suggestions for managing and working with your hives. We will discuss day-to-day beekeeping issues along with CCD, honeybee nutrition, and varroa management.

Randy Oliver has kept bees for over 40 years and now practices small commercial beekeeping in the Sierra Nevada foothills, running a 500 colony migratory operation. He researches worldwide scientific literature and beekeeping practices, applying his knowledge to practical beekeeping with a series of beekeeping journal articles in the American Bee Journal along with his own
